Artist David Gardiner creates mosaics in his home studio in Independence, Minnesota, a rural community about 30 minutes west of downtown Minneapolis. The studio is peacefully nestled in the midst of old-growth basswood, maple, and oak trees, some of which were seedlings during the Civil War. Because of this setting, trees, leaves, and nature in general tend to be central elements of his designs. Click here to see mosaics.

I love simplicity, the challenge of taking a complex image, thought, or emotion and reducing it to its essence. My mosaics tend to reflect this, containing a relatively small number of carefully shaped pieces and a limited palette of materials.

My background? A Ph.D. in Computer Science with 25 years in the software industry. Never took an art course. Never considered the possibility of being an artist. Started doing mosaics for fun. Found that I really enjoyed it and people seemed to like my work, so I started selling them. Each mosaic is a unique labor of love. I do all the work myself, so production is very limited.

The flower pots are built to withstand Minnesota winters. Each pot is built using quality materials and techniques and is sealed with a top-quality sealant. All pots should be re-sealed every year. As you would expect, a mosaic that is sheltered from the elements will last longer than one that is exposed.
